Homework

This academic year we are changing the overall process of how our homework is set, delivered and monitored. We are introducing, year group by year group, an on line system called ‘Show My Homework’ (SMH).

This process began in September with Year 7 and SMH will be launched for Year 8 to use in January 2017. Our Year 9 will have their launch at Easter 2017 and KS4 next September 2017.

Show My Homework is a system that allows staff to set and track homework on line in a more rigorous manner, whilst giving parents the opportunity to check that their youngster/s is/are completing their tasks on time and consistently.

All students, parents and staff have been allocated individual log in details in order to access SMH. If you have any technical issues please use the following link Click Here

It is advisable that the students complete their homework on computer/laptop/device which has Microsoft Office installed on it, in order to access the software needed for completing tasks. However, mobile devices can be used to check and track homework tasks.

Therefore, it is advisable to download the free SMH ‘app’ onto your phone/device and your son/daughters to receive homework alerts and easier access to the SMH website.

It contains an element of independent study in that it is not usually directly supervised by a teacher. It is important in raising student achievement, developing study skills and preparing students for the new GCSE courses that are now more examination based.

Not all homework is done at home; in fact, for some pupils who find it hard to work at home, or for some tasks which may require resources (books, software, equipment) more readily available at school, it is necessary or desirable to carry out the task at school in the Homework rooms. These are ICT5 and the LRB Media suite.

Top Tips
for Parents

Homework enhances student learning, improves and develops students' study skills and as such is an integral part of the curriculum.

Working effectively at home will improve your son's/daughter's achievement and get them into good work habits for later years.

The role of the Parents

The role of the parent is crucial if a child is to gain success from homework. To reinforce its value through positive feedback will give students the confidence to persevere, work hard and reach high standarads of achievement and mastery.

Parents can assist by:

  • Providing a comfortable, quiet place to work with a table and chair
  • Negotiating with your son/daughter when homework is to be completed
  • Establishing a routine - for example, immediately after tea but before leisure time
  • Removing any distractions such as the T.V, although music can be a good aid to a working atmosphere
  • Getting the facts - understand what the homework is and when it has to be handed in to school
  • Work with your son/daughter on tasks such as revision or learning factual information
  • Checking time spent on individual tasks
  • Checking the presentation and content of all homework that is returned to school
  • Signing the homework journal each week
  • Establishing a system of rewards - reward completed work (short term prizes work best)
  • Providing the school with information about any problems through the student journal or by contacting the school directly
  • Ensuring that outside interests do not hamper your son/daughter's qaulity of work and put them under undue pressure
